Jim Angaran's Music

music

The songs I have written are largely autobiographical. Events in my life have given me cause to compose and express my emotions as I live through and reflect on them during retirement.

A Love Sublime

January 2006

My wife and I celebrated our 38th anniversary in January in Hawaii. Our evening walks along the beach and the sights and sounds of “paradise” inspired this song about the alluring surroundings and the feelings of romance and love.

Baby Knows

April 2007

For our first grandchild.

Beyond All Measure

August 2001

This is the first song I wrote after I retired. It is about how my wife and I met and fell in love way back in our college days when we were about 20 years old.

Circle of Love

December 2007

Our 40th Anniversary.

Come Home

June 2005

This is a highly nostalgic song that I felt deeply watching my 85-year-old father and my wife’s 89-year-old mother deal with growing older and being left alone so much of the time. I feel them crying and sighing about missing the time together with family.

Firefly

September 2006

This is for the wedding of the daughter of my all-time close friends. The daughter sang for 7 years in the Heart of the Valley Choir when I directed it in the 80s and early 90s. I wrote this to describe the bride’s vibrant personality and deep felt love.

Flying High

March 2006

This is a love story really about the commitment of a man and woman to each other. Love lifts me high.

I Dream

February 2006

My concern for the state of violence and the assault on the poor troubles me. I wrote this to remind everyone how easy it is to make the world a beautiful, loving and safe place. We need to help every sister, brother, or stranger in need.

I'm Gonna Sing My Song

January 2009

Sung by the 2009 Heart of the Valley Reunion Choir

It's Christmas

December 2005

I wrote this to celebrate the season of giving and love. I sent a CD of me singing it to friends and family as a Christmas card. I like it a lot. Notice the quotes at the opening (Deck) and the end (Have yourself a Merry Christmas)

I've Been Looking For Love

September 2005

I have been really concerned for the future of our country as I watch freedoms wither and the politicians self-serving. I am worried also at how uninformed and ignorant many voters/non-voters seem to be.  I wrote this in protest about many of the political situations.

My Star

February 2005

My very dear aunt Mary passed away in ’05. The thing I remember about her was the way she loved to laugh. She was on Oxygen for emphysema from 1996 til her death, yet she kept laughing and loving as her health declined. I also wrote this for my uncle Joe who tells a joke a minute and who was devastated by her death after 49 years of marriage.

There's a Place

December 2003

I wrote this about my wife and myself in how everyone has a quiet, safe place inside which sometimes we hide from others, but eventually with a very special someone we find and rejoice in that place.

Two Brothers

November 2005

Lyrically this is an interesting song. It is about my older brother and I who had an adventurous childhood, but let our lives drift apart for many years. Meanwhile, time flies by and the bell tolls.

Walk With Me

March 2003

I wrote this in ’03 for my younger sister who lives in LA and was going through two cancer operations and chemotherapy. She is so good-hearted and loving and life still deals her a heavy load. She has recovered and is leading a healthy life with her husband of many years despite the worry of a recurrence.

Waters Must Flow

May 2006

The action of the waves bashing the shore at the coast gave inspiration to me in comparing the violent aspects of water with the more gentle sprinkles and sparkles of water in the rain. It is really about people and which way will you be.

We Are One

December 2002

This song I composed and then sang for my son’s wedding in ’03. The love between him and his bride so inspired me to compare their beautiful relationship to the beauty of nature.

You Carry Me

April 2003

This song is a tribute to my mother who passed away way too early in her 50s. I miss her so much. She was a singer and painter and I loved her for her artistry and sweetness. She endured much for her children.
